Mentoring for Foster Carers

Following an enquiry from Bedfordshire County Council we, in association with the Baikie-Woods consultancy Ltd created and successfully delivered a mentoring course for experienced Foster Carers. The idea was for them was to mentor the less experienced Foster Carers.

This unique programme has now been refined ready to be launched into the marketplace and is currently being considered for use as a national standard.

The benefits of mentoring are huge and include

• Reduced "settling in" time
• Higher retention rates
• Quicker problem solving
• Less pressure on Social Services resources
• Provides the opportunity for experienced carers to put even more back into the system
• Creates the opportunity for long term friendships

The programme was delivered by a trainer with years of fostering experience, which added to the effectiveness of this well received programme.

Programme includes;

• Defining the Foster/Mentor role
• Identifying typical issues that mentee may raise
• Stages in the mentoring relationship
• Effective Introductory meetings
• Key skills identified and practised
• Further skill practise using scenarios applicable to Foster Carers
• Identify roles and responsibilities of mentor/mentee/organisation
• Identify and address potential pitfalls
• Explore potential benefits to all parties

The programme is usually delivered over two days (10.0-14.00) to accomodate carers on school runs. This can be adjusted to suit client.
